Puzzle games that don't waste your time

Not every puzzle game is designed for the same kind of player. Some want you locked in for an hour, others are made for the ninety seconds you have in a queue. Knowing which is which saves a lot of disappointment.

The first thing I look for is whether a board can be finished quickly. Games like Lucky Coins let you complete a level in under a minute, which makes them ideal for grabbing a moment here and there. That structure is friendlier than a puzzle that punishes you for stepping away.

The second thing is timers. Forced countdowns turn a relaxing game into a stressful one. I much prefer optional challenge modes over a timer bolted onto every level. If the standard mode lets me think, I'm in.

Finally, check the save behavior. A good offline puzzler saves after every board so closing the app mid-session costs you nothing. When I test a game I deliberately kill it mid-puzzle to see what happens on relaunch.

Get those three things right and a puzzle game fits into a real life instead of demanding one. That's the bar I hold every recommendation to.
