The best offline RPGs for a long flight

Flights are the ultimate test of an offline game. No connection, limited battery, and hours to fill. RPGs are perfect for this because a good one gives you something to sink into rather than a quick loop that gets old.

Ember Wardens is my top pick and it earned that on an actual eleven-hour flight. Turn-based combat means you can play at your own speed, and the story kept me curious enough to skip the movie. The skill trees gave me something to tinker with between fights.

The main thing to check before you board is whether the game truly runs offline. Plenty of RPGs sneak in a login check or an ad wall that needs data. We test for exactly this, so anything we tag as offline has passed airplane mode on our own devices.

One battery tip: drop your screen brightness and turn off any haptic feedback. Turn-based games in particular don't need a bright screen the whole time, and you'll stretch your playtime a lot further.

If you want variety on the same trip, load one long RPG and one short puzzler. That way you have something for when your brain is fresh and something for when you're too tired to strategize.
