Iron Frontier

Iron Frontier is the kind of strategy game where a quiet planning phase leads to a tense defense. You lay out buildings, assign workers and stockpile resources before each raid, and getting the layout wrong is punished hard. I lost my first colony in about ten minutes and immediately restarted with a grudge.

The interface is well thought out for touch. Dragging structures snaps cleanly to the grid, and the tech tree is laid out so you can see what unlocks what without squinting. Difficulty ramps up at a fair pace once you learn the rhythm.

It's a full offline experience, no daily login nonsense. That made it perfect for a hotel room with terrible Wi-Fi. My only gripe is that late-game battles can slow down a little on older devices.
