Ember Wardens
Ember Wardens surprised me with how much story it packs into a phone game. You lead a small party and each character has a distinct role, from a stubborn tank to a healer who never shuts up. Battles are turn-based, so you can pause and think, which is exactly what you want when you're only half paying attention on a couch.
The progression loop is generous. You earn skill points steadily and the branching skill trees actually let you build a mage into something wildly different from a run I did earlier. Loot is meaningful too, and inventory management never turned into a chore.
Best of all it's completely playable offline. I ran through several dungeons on a long flight and never saw a loading hitch. The writing has a dry sense of humor that kept me clicking through dialogue instead of skipping it.
What we liked
- Deep skill trees with real choices
- Turn-based combat you can pause anytime
- No connection needed for full campaign
